Business Card Design Don'ts
Business card design may seem like a simple enough proposition, but there are a number of things that can go wrong if you don't pay attention to the little details.
For starters, make sure that the print on your business card is legible. This may seem like a given, but sometimes the desire to fit in as much information on a business card as possible overtakes common sense. You may have great eyesight, but you shouldn't assume every one of your prospective clients has 20-20 vision.
On the same token, burying important contact information somewhere in the fine print or on the back of your business card is generally not encouraged. If your potential client is the type that is always in a hurry, your business card might end up in the garbage.
Oh, and while you're at it, make sure that all the information you have written on the card is both factually correct and spell-checked. There is absolutely no excuse for passing out business cards with errors of any kind.
The same thing goes for choosing the right colour scheme for your business card. Make sure that the colours match. Obviously, this may be a little more crucial if you are trying to sell your services as a wardrobe consultant or interior decorator, but don't assume that you could get away with mixing yellow, green, blue and red on a card just because you're in the construction business.
Although the point of having a business card is to stand out, you don't want to create one that is unmanageable. Printing business cards that are larger than the standard size and that therefore will not fit into standard filing systems is counterproductive. Please do not assume that people will modify their filing systems to accommodate your business cards.
If you are trying to save money on your business card design, make sure you don't do it by getting your business cards printed on the thinnest paper around. Not only does this advertise you're fragile financial position, but it also makes for a very fragile business card. One drop of rain or coffee and your business card will be done for.
And last but not least, do not assume that you can save a couple of bucks by trying to design your own business cards. There are tons of professional graphic designers out there who can help you avoid all of these common mistakes.
