Does Your Business Card Speak for You?

If a business card truly is the proverbial window into your company's heart and soul, the last thing you want to do is obstruct the view.

If the above metaphor sounds a little overblown, consider this: Before clients ever have a chance to meet you and discuss your company's objectives and goals, they often have to rely solely on your business card. Aside from providing basic contact information, business cards can provide prospective clients with a visual sense of just how dedicated and creative and entrepreneur you really are. And that is exactly why your business card design and business card printing are so vital to the face of your business.

The best way to figure out just what your card says about you is to pull out your present business card and put yourself in your client's shoes. What exactly is he or she seeing? Perhaps the card is poorly designed and unnecessarily cluttered with useless information that makes it hard to read. If you were receiving this card, would you assume the person who gave it to you was messy and disorganized? Maybe. Is your card overly flashy and loud? Perhaps that's also not the best idea either, especially if you are in a serious profession such as a doctor or lawyer.

Obviously, we're getting into specifics here. The basic rule is that all business cards should be legible and informative. That means that using wacky fonts that are smaller than 10 points or printing up business cards without your name, telephone, fax number and pertinent e-mail information is a no go.

Once you've got the basics down, it's up to you to figure out how to take your business card to the next level.

Card stocks, for example, can go a long way in giving clients a feel for your company. If you work for a private construction company that puts up condominiums, it might make sense to use a credit-card-like card stock or plastic business card as opposed to going with the flimsier paper variety. Glossy lamination and graphics would work a lot better for a freelance clown than they would for a mortician - who might prefer a solemn text heavy business card with a raised letter print.

In the end, only you will be able to decide what business card best matches your company's personality. And never be afraid to get risky - unless you are an insurance broker, of course.
