Seeking Inspiration for your Logo Design

Have you been racking your brain trying to figure out why your corporate logo simply isn't doing it for you anymore?

Although some of the notions behind effective logo design can be difficult to wrap your head around, it's important to bear in mind that inspiration is never more than a heartbeat away. If there is one thing our own houses, grocery stores and streets are full of, its corporate logos.

If you want to understand why some logos just work while others don't, well then take a little trip to your refrigerator an have a look inside. Inside, you'll find dozens of successful company logos branded on everything from your bread to your ice cream and soft drinks. What you need to figure out is how and why these products ended up in your fridge? Did you choose them solely based on price and quality, or is it likely that you were somehow inexplicably drawn to the package at the grocery store.

If you answered the latter, perhaps it's time to take a little trip to the corner grocery store and see corporate logos and branding in action. As you walk down the aisles, pay special attention to things like packaging, colour and typeface when you consider the products you buy week in and week out. Now take a closer look at the logo designs of the competing generic brands. It is obvious that the logos and packaging aren't as attractive, so what is it about the big-name products that work so well: Is it the attractive fonts or the eye-catching colours? And ask yourself why the generics seem to try to copy these winning recipes.

Obviously, you can repeat the same field experiment at any number of stores, regardless of whether they are selling power tools, electronics or toys. Once you've done that, perhaps it is time to take a second look at your corporate logo and compare it to those of your immediate competitors. If you were to lay down your company logo on a table next to five of your competitors', would your eye really be drawn to your own? If the answer is no, then it is very possible that your corporate logo is in serious need of a professional makeover.

Working with a graphics specialist is a great way to ensure that your company logo stands out and grabs people's attention while also giving clients a sense of what it is your company stands for. The great thing about logo design is that no one's stopping you from learning from the mistakes of others.
